How It All Started

A Dumpsite Becomes a Dream

The Go Green Go Clean project in Eldorado Park Extension 8 occupies a servitude owned by Joburg City Property, stretching from Turf Avenue through Edward Baatjies, Tosman Friesly, Epsom, Albert Dickenson and Dartmoor avenues. This strip was previously a dumpsite — with streaming sewage and overgrown grass that sheltered criminals.

In 2013, Rashid Juma — a former magician turned green activist — gathered unemployed volunteers and cleaned it up. After removing the grass and planting lawn and flowers, crime in the area dropped significantly.

In 2019, after a short illness, Rashid returned with renewed vigour and a vision for an ECO Tourism Walkway, outdoor art gallery, and environmental education space.

In 2021, Barloworld Empowerment Foundation provided critical grant funding, enabling stipends for volunteers who had worked without pay for over seven years.

In March 2024, in partnership with Heineken and Greenpop, GGGC launched the Heineken Green Zone and the Khoi Heritage Site — celebrating the Khoi and San first nation through vibrant murals and rock art.
